Spirit Airlines: Two Thumbs Down

In June, we had the opportunity to accompany my husband to a professional conference being hosted in Las Vegas. Since we were looking for great deals, we were interested in the low-cost fares offered by Spirit Airlines.

Before choosing Spirit, be sure to note several things. First of all, not only do you have to pay to check a bag, you also have to pay to bring a carry-on bag. (You are allowed one free personal item like a purse or briefcase, but an additional carry-on bag is an added charge.) Since Spirit is a low-cost carrier, nearly everything is considered an add-on.

When we flew out of Denver (DIA) on a Tuesday, we were immediately faced with two additional important facts you should consider before choosing Spirit. First, I have never, ever been on a plane with as little legroom. It felt like I was sitting on a kiddie ride at an amusement park. I am a very average sized person, and my knees were easily touching the seat in front of me. How taller individuals would fit into the seats is beyond my comprehension. Second, Spirit airlines does not offer a complimentary beverage in flight. Sorry--no Ginger Ale ladies and gentlemen. Purchase something in the airport to bring with you on the plane.

Here's the best part. And by the best, I mean the worst.

When we were flying from LAS back to DEN, our flight was delayed, and delayed, and delayed. Why? Oh, it's because our flight attendants quit. Or got sick. Or something like that. So, the gate agents announced that they would get us in the air when they found some replacements. A few hours later, we finally took off.

At that point, we were arriving back in Denver 4 hours late. It was 11 p.m. We were traveling with a toddler. AKA--Bedtime is around 7:45 p.m. Delayed flights are a risk you take, I guess. However, upon our arrival to baggage claim, we waited, and waited, and waited. There were no staff members at the Spirit baggage claim. Passengers were attempting phone calls to Spirit Airlines, and no one was responding. Finally, a gentleman on our flight walked up to the Spirit counter upstairs to ask about our luggage. Their response? "We're sorry, but Spirit Airlines is understaffed, so it is going to be a while." Convenient.

By this time, it is after midnight. People are past the point of being tired and grumpy... we're all just delirious.

Fortunately, our toddler fell asleep in her car seat and we were able to carry her to bed without her waking up.

Never again, Spirit. Never again.

  1. Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I was wondering about them as I dropped my sister off at the air port last week. Guess I won't be using them or United. Apparently, they have issues too.

  2. Yuck! Unfortunatly I think every airline has their issues. We flew Allegiant (another low cost carrier) to Las Vegas and loved them - although they also charge for everything, but we didn't find that to be a big deal since its a short flight.

  3. That is a brutal experience. It's already stressful enough to travel with small children, but when you run into these kinds of issues it makes it that much more difficult. Argh!
