Introducing my Summer Co-Blogger!

I am so excited that my Dallas friend Ashley is joining The Intentional Momma as a summer co-blogger!

Ashley and I have been friends since our college days--we'll just say that that's been more than a decade! We lived on the same floor in our university freshman residence hall, then we spent a summer traveling abroad in Europe. We were also roommates during our junior and senior years of college, and we had so much fun with our other roomies! Take me back!

Once we "grew up," we were bridesmaids in each other's weddings, and now we have little girls that are just months apart!

Ashley and I share a love for traveling, creating, dancing, and laughing!

Alberta Falls in May

Today we left home early to get a head start on our Memorial Day hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. We have realized that when hiking with a toddler, you have to start early to avoid afternoon meltdowns. It was a beautiful, clear day with blue skies overhead!

The temperature was a cool 50 degrees and the pine trees smelled great. We started at the Bear Lake trailhead where the hike to Alberta Falls is 1.1 miles, making it realistic for small kids.
Alberta Falls mountain hike
You walk downhill for around half a mile. The trail is not overly rugged, and it is lined with aspens and offers great views! As you can see, the aspens have put on leaves.
The sound of rushing water gets louder as you cross several streams and approach the falls.
At this point, it is all uphill and offers spectacular scenery! It's a long way down!
Drumroll, please... Here it is! Not a bad hike, although the flat-landers definitely have to stop for a few breaks! There are lots of great boulders for picnic spots, several of which are shaded. Alberta Falls is definitely worth the hike, especially if you're able to find parking at the Glacier Gorge trailhead, which is almost impossible. Either way, it's a beautiful hike, and easily accessible.
Here is the view from the top! Not bad!
We decided to hike upstream another quarter mile or so, and it's so lovely and peaceful!
At this point, we were standing in a small patch of snow... Still a little cold at the top. (Elevation 9,400 feet.)

Just to offer a little perspective, here was one of the trail markers today compared to the same sign on our Alberta Falls snowshoeing hike in April 2009.
That's just one of the many things we love about RMNP... The changes in weather and seasons bring dramatic differences to each and every visit!

Another great day!

Note: Being Memorial Day weekend, today was the busiest I've ever seen Estes Park, so the summer crowds are coming! Take advantage of the free and convenient shuttle bus during the peak season!

Playroom ABC Art DIY

For this easy and inexpensive playroom wall hanging, I used a large piece of cardboard, craft paint, mod podge, hot glue gun, and grosgrain ribbon. I also printed out capital alphabet letters in various colors and fonts.

Steps:
1. Divide cardboard into three sections and paint.
2. Attach letters with mod podge.
3. Decorate edges with a fun border, and possibly line edges with ribbon for a clean line.
4. Finish off with a thin layer of mod podge on the top.
5. Add some hanging ribbon and hang on the wall!

Colorful Toddler Learning with Pom-Pom Busy Bag

teaching toddler learning activity crafts

This is probably our favorite busy bag yet!

What you'll need:
-half of an egg carton
-an empty coffee creamer container or similar plastic container
-colored craft pom-poms
-craft paint

I originally just used the empty coffee creamer container for my toddler to practice pushing the pom-poms through the hole in the top. But, I decided to take it a step further to let her practice sorting (which she loves, by the way).

After cutting an egg carton in half, I painted the inside of each cup with the corresponding color. Once it was dry, she could sort the pom-poms into the appropriate color (or, "matching" as she calls it).

She loves to then place the pom-poms back into the plastic container, and move them back and forth, and then carry them around, and sort them again, and...

When you're done, just toss the materials into a gallon-sized ziptop bag!

DIY Felt and Magnet Board

Since I am in the process of creating a toddler playroom on a budget, I recently made a magnet and felt board for under $4.

At Walmart, I purchased a cookie sheet for 92 cents, and a half yard of black felt for $1.99. Other supplies I used included four rectangles of cardboard (obtained from a diaper box), hot glue, and grosgrain ribbon.

First, I cut four rectangles of cardboard from a diaper box and hot glued them together to create one thick, sturdy rectangle. Then I wrapped the cardboard rectangle in black felt and secured the back with hot glue.

Second, I cut three pieces of grosgrain ribbon approximately six inches in length. After marking the center of the back of the cookie sheet and the center of the back of the felt board, I hot glued the ribbons to the back of the cookie sheet and felt board to attach the two together.

Finally, I attached a short ribbon to the top of the back of the cookie sheet as a hanging loop, making it small enough to avoid strangulation.

So easy! My toddler loves playing with this!

Busy Bag #4

A free and easy busy bag idea for your toddler: paint chip matching!

You can pick up a few of these at your local home improvement store. I chose basic colors in the larger size. After cutting each one in half, your toddler can match the colors through the little square windows, which is surprisingly entertaining!

Since this busy bag is so compact and fits nicely into a plastic sandwich bag, it is great for slipping into your purse when your little one is getting restless or bored.  A helpful hint: laminate each card for durability!

Free Old Navy and Cheap Pampers!

I recently learned about the new Old Navy "snap appy" app which allows you to win freebies and deals from Old Navy! My husband and I each downloaded the free app, and we both won some fun prizes! We each won a pair of free flip flops and a $5 credit, with no minimum purchase. Since Old Navy currently has toddler items marked down to $4-$5 each, we were able to stock up on 2 new shirts and 2 new pair of shoes for our toddler--totally free! Regular price would have been around $30.

Right now Kroger stores have Pampers wipes on sale for $1.99. With the current 75-cents-off Pampers wipes (which will double up to $1), you can get Pampers wipes for 99 cents per package!

Here are some great current printable baby and toddler coupons: $2.00 off one package of GOODNITES Underwear
$1.00 off Any MAM Product
$2.00 off Any ONE (1) Similac SimplySmart™ bottle
$1.50 off ONE Pampers Cruisers or Baby Dry Diapers
