Today we left home early to get a head start on our Memorial Day hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. We have realized that when hiking with a toddler, you have to start early to avoid afternoon meltdowns. It was a beautiful, clear day with blue skies overhead!
The temperature was a cool 50 degrees and the pine trees smelled great. We started at the Bear Lake trailhead where the hike to Alberta Falls is 1.1 miles, making it realistic for small kids.
You walk downhill for around half a mile. The trail is not overly rugged, and it is lined with aspens and offers great views! As you can see, the aspens have put on leaves.
The sound of rushing water gets louder as you cross several streams and approach the falls.
At this point, it is all uphill and offers spectacular scenery! It's a long way down!
Drumroll, please... Here it is! Not a bad hike, although the flat-landers definitely have to stop for a few breaks! There are lots of great boulders for picnic spots, several of which are shaded. Alberta Falls is definitely worth the hike, especially if you're able to find parking at the Glacier Gorge trailhead, which is almost impossible. Either way, it's a beautiful hike, and easily accessible.
Here is the view from the top! Not bad!
We decided to hike upstream another quarter mile or so, and it's so lovely and peaceful!
At this point, we were standing in a small patch of snow... Still a little cold at the top. (Elevation 9,400 feet.)
Just to offer a little perspective, here was one of the trail markers today compared to the same sign on our Alberta Falls snowshoeing hike in April 2009.
That's just one of the many things we love about RMNP... The changes in weather and seasons bring dramatic differences to each and every visit!
Another great day!
Note: Being Memorial Day weekend, today was the busiest I've ever seen Estes Park, so the summer crowds are coming! Take advantage of the free and convenient shuttle bus during the peak season!
